Uncharted 2 Co-Op Online

Having finished the single player of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves a while back, and not having played on it for a while it was time to return to the game but this time to go online and play against, and alongside other people!

The game has a number of different online games to play and the most popular is Deathmatch. This involves 2 teams running around any one of a number of maps shooting members of the opposite team. The first team to reach a set number of kills (usually 50) wins. You earn points and money depending on how many people you kill, how many times you die and whether you’re on the the winning team. So over a period of time you increase your score and reach new levels that allows you to buy special boosters for use in-game, that hopefully makes you a better player.

But not with me! In each Deathmatch game I’ve played I have probably not come bottom only three or four times. A truly pathetic statistic. And talking of statistics, Naughty Dog – the developers of the game – also make your stats available online for all other people to see. You can check out my miserable stats here.

Over at O&R, the launch of Modern Warfare 2 (you might have heard of it!) has pretty much taken over some people’s time, and so last week one member instigated a get-together for those with UC2, and get some online games going between ourselves instead of the great unwashed!

And so on Monday night, 8 of us gathered in the UC2 lobby to get a game or two. But due to problems with the Playstation Network (PSN) we only managed to get 4 of us playing at any one time and then only for a short period of time. This frustration caused many people to drop out and leave to play other games but three of us stuck it out and eventually got a co-op game going. And what a laugh it was!

Playing a mini-story, the three of us battled it out against an onslaught of enemies as we tried to complete each level, with each level getting more and more difficult than the previous one. This mode is so much better than Deathmatch as it has a lot more depth. Deathmatch very quickly becomes a game of shoot, die, respawn, shoot die, respawn, over and over!

We eventually made it through to the end of the game after about half an hour, and when the scores were revealed I had come bottom. Again! But this time I didn’t care, because the whole experience had been about a hundred times better than what I had had in previous online games. All the problems we had come across trying to get online (apparently MAG was the culprit!) had been forgotten about, my inability to effectively kill people didn’t ruin the game for me. I actually felt part of a team. An ineffective member maybe, but a team nonetheless!
