The Race Is On

This season must be the one where I have been injured the most . From niggling little injuries like tight hamstrings from having played so many games in a short period of times to the broken toe back in January, 2009-10 season has been the most accident-prone season yet.

And yesterday I was able to add another injury to that list. With only 10 minutes left to go in our match with Horsted, I slid in on a challenge with their striker and having cleanly won the ball the player clattered into my ankle with his studs showing. The pain was horrific and I actually thought he might have broken it. But as I was carried off the pitch I realised it might not be that severe.

Having made it home to change out of my soaking wet gear, I then spent a few hours up at the hospital, or as I now call it, my second home, waiting to have it x-rayed and for the docs to take a look.

Luckily there was no break, or crack in the bone (my worst fear) but the bone and surrounding tissue was badly bruised. I was told by the doctor to give it a couple of weeks before playing on it, but he told me that, as I have a cup final to play in this coming weekend, it may be OK for that, if I treat it well. This means staying off it for at least a couple of days and to keep it elevated when possible.

I’ve also been given some drugs to take to help the pain and the swelling and so now it is a case of trying to make it better by Saturday so that I have a real hope of playing in the final. We’ve already lost one of our strikers and are down to about 14 players so I don’t really want to miss it!

With the amount of injuries I’ve had this season and the amount of time it’s taking to get over them I think it may be time to hang up the boots…
