Floored By Their Ineptitude
So they’ve been in the house for 3 days now and there is absolutely no way that they will be finished by the end of this week as they have only done 2 rooms so far and there’s still another 3 and a landing to do yet!
You couldn’t call it a delay as such, because they totally screwed up the original estimate of having it all done within a week. There was no way it could have been done in that amount of time. God knows what they were thinking.
“So what have they done” I hear you cry. Well to try and fix the problem they have cut out the floor in each room to find that none of the joists had been glued together! You’d have thought the instructions on the floorboards to ensure that joists were glued together might have given the original builders a clue as to what to do, but no! One of the problems of using Asian builders who hardly spoke English whenever we met them? Probably.
As they cut out the floor they found other problems including insulation missing from some of the gaps, and the boards not actually meeting on the joist but halfway across them. No wonder there was so much noise coming from them they were wobbling about all over the place!
One of my favourite fuck-ups though was the realisation that the vent for the extractor fan in the kitchen below that came up under the floor in one of the bedrooms wasn’t fitted correctly. The ducting, which was supposed to reach the hole in the wall for it, was just curled up in the gap between the joists facing the wall. So not only was it not extracting to outside, as there was no insulation there must have been some cold air coming into the house from the gap in the wall!
So now that they are having to fix other problems that they encounter they definitely won’t be done by the end of this week!
