Another Game, Another Goal
After last week’s dramatic last-minute win in the quarter finals we finally got round to playing a league game for only the third time this year yesterday, our first in seven weeks, with a game against Anchorians Athletic.
What should have been a straight forward win (we beat them 4-1 earlier this season) turned out to be a lot closer, but only because we spurned loads of opportunities. Instead of being about 4-0 up at half time there was only the one goal in it and so the second half proved to be a bit of a nail-biter as we fought of the advances of the opposing team and also looked for the next decisive goal.
As has been the story of our season, we missed chance after chance, while Anchorians also got closer and closer to equalising. But with only 8 minutes to go, after some good build up play, up I popped in the opposing area to head in from close range, to put some breathing space between us.
It goes to show how inept the team is at scoring when I am currently the second highest scorer in the team. Our leading scorer has 10 goals while I now have 7, six of which have been headers! This has been my best season in goal-scoring terms since I returned to playing regular Sunday League football about 10 years ago. And I’m a defender! And the oldest on the team.
Hopefully the rest of the team will start scoring soon because it’s a bit of a burden having to carry the rest of the team each week 🙂
