The iPhone Beater?

After two years of having the same mobile phone, and that same phone starting to play tricks on me, it’s time to start looking for the next phone to sit dormant on my desk and then in my pocket.

My current mobile is the Nokia N82, a great little phone that has some good functionality, is small enough yet not too small to work with and best of all, isn’t an iPhone. My dislike of Apple stems from the clunky-ness of some of their software, and the things it imposes on you.

The only reason I have an iPod is that at the time there were no other MP3 players around that could hold my significant music collection, and who wants to only have a selection of their music available to listen to? not me, that’s who. And so after years of owning a Sony Walkman (not the tape kind!), when it broke I had to give in to Apple and buy the 160Gb classic iPod.

But back to the phones…the iPhone to me is more about style over substance. Apple fanboys rave about the product as though it’s the second coming of Christ, but when it comes to how I use my phone there’s nothing the iPod can do that my current N82 can’t.

So when it started to die on me my only thought was what Nokia can I get to replace it? The N97 seemed like a step back and the X6 looked a little flimsy and after many hours of researching I came across the N900. And, wow!

It uses Maemo software to run, moving away from Symbian, and has the capability to run multiple applications at once, something the iPhone (in it’s current state) cannot do. It’s more like a mobile computer than a mobile phone and there are a wealth of applications available to download (notice how I refuse to say “app”. Damn!) to it from the Ovi and Maemo stores. It has a multiple desktop touch-screen that allows you to place loads of shortcuts all over it so you can launch your favourite games, websites very quickly.

I will no doubt spend the next few weeks drooling over it while trying to find the cheapest price for it before finally purchasing it from the Nokia store!
