Another Year All Over
Only 9 hours left to go of what some people have been calling 2009, or “oh-nine” if they’re a fan of shortening things for no other obvious reason in that they can’t be arsed to pronounce an extra syllable (see SuBo or Jedward!), and the big question on everyone’s lips, or at least on my lips, is “is it too early to start drinking yet?”
This interim period between Christmas and New Year, as pointed out the other day, is a pretty boring time. The shops are really busy with their sales – which is just an excuse to get out the stuff they didn’t sell earlier in the year and pretend it’s now cheaper – and supermarkets are full of people stocking up for their New Years parties which, by the looks of one person’s trolley today, is going to consist of 11 cases of Carling and no food!
New Years Eve for me is usually spent trying to find an Anniversary card for the other half because I forgot to buy one before Christmas. And today was no exception, but this year all anniversary cards seem to have the words husband or wife in them, or they allude to marriage, and so after a fruitless search I decided I would do the next best thing and make her one (thanks god for Microsoft Publisher!).
Now you might think that getting together on New Years Eve is special, what you’ll actually find is that it can be a pain in the arse! Most people spend their anniversaries going out for dinner or going away for a few days but we can’t do that because we got together at a time when pubs charge you for entry so we can’t go out for a quiet drink, restaurants have a special menu which seems to include an incredible price increase, and hotels also bump their prices up trying to cash in on the last/first holiday of the year! Bastards!
And so we decided that unless it was a special anniversary (i.e. the number of years we’ve been together ends in a five or a zero) we wouldn’t go all out and spend money like it was going out of fashion. Which is why this year we will be spending the evening at the gf’s sister’s house with her and her husband, drinking a little, eating a lot and probably playing games on the Wii or PS3 until about 1am when we will stagger home. A relatively sedate evening when compared to others I’m sure but it’s all I can really be bothered with!
