Tulsa to Clinton

After a restless night and being awake early we checked out of the Desert Hills and went to find somewhere for breakfast. What we found was Ollie’s Station Restaurant. Set next to a railroad, the restaurant is decked out with hundreds of pieces of train paraphernalia and also has a number of model railway trains going around the place.

We continued our journey on to Oklahoma with a few photo stops along the way of parts of the old cobbled road and bridges as well as some picturesque towns and Shoe Tree (a tree with shoes in it!). One of our scheduled stops was at McJerry’s Gallery to meet with Jerry McLanahan, the author of the EZ66 Guide, the book we’re using to navigate the route. Unfortunately Jerry turned out to be in Dallas, but we did have a chat on the phone, telling him about our trip.

Next stop was the Round Barn in Arcadia followed by a drink stop at Pops. This place has over 400 types of soda in every conceivable flavour. We bought a few but it took a long time to decide which ones to actually get. In the end we opted for Zuberfizz Orange Cream Soda, Capone’s Blue Raspberry, Yacht Club Strawberry Soda, Dang Diet Root Beer, Goose Island Root Beer and Ryan Cherry Soda.

When we got to Oklahoma we visited the National Memorial, which honours the 168 victims of the 1995 bombing of a downtown federal building.

We knew our good luck with the weather couldn’t last and it caught up with us today as we headed towards a storm. It started raining just after lunch and hasn’t let up yet! The rest of the day was spent on wet roads, some flooded in places and as a result had to go slower than we wanted, but we made it to Clinton in the end and found a motel to check into, the quite rightly named Budget Inn. But for $46 a night we didn’t expect luxury!
