Lebanon to Tulsa

A late start this morning. We left Munger Moss shortly before 9am (sent on our way with a big hug from Ramona, the friendliest hotelier I’ve ever met!) and then stopped for breakfast at Elm St Eatery, and so didn’t get on the road until 10am. Had my first taste of “biscuits and gravy” which is basically a cross between a muffin and a scone with a white sauce of sausage gravy. A very popular dish in the US, but not with us. Don’t think I’ll be having it again!

Our first stop of the day was at Spencer MO, to take a look at an old gas station which is currently being renovated by the Ryan’s, but is still a little way off being completely restored.

Just after the Kansas border we stopped at “4 Women on the Route” in Galena. It’s here that Pixar got some of their inspiration for the movie Cars. Outside the building is the car that inspired the Tow Mater character and we also met ‘Crazy Legs’ Dean Walker who is the reason that Tow Mater likes to drive backwards in the film; Dean can turn his legs round to face his feet the wrong way!

Part of our journey through Oklahoma, our third state of the day, was on the 9 foot highway. This is a stretch of the old road about seven and a half miles long which is a narrow strip of road which was paved in 1922, before it became Route 66, although it’s mostly gravel now.

We drove through OK and into Tulsa where we had our next scheduled stop at the Desert Hills Motel, and found ourselves something to eat at Tally’s.

We’ve been really fortunate with the weather so far, it’s been really hot and sunny (shame we spend most of it in the car), and for the next few days it looks as though this will continue. Until we get to Texas that is, because it’s been raining a bit there recently.

Miles travelled today: 278
Total miles travelled: 790
