The Book Of Mormon
After waiting six and a half months since I bought the tickets, The Wife and I headed into the West End last night to see the new musical from the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the religion-poking Book Of Mormon.
It was a Broadway smash when it opened in America and has now made it over here and as you can imagine coming from the minds of Stone and Parker it’s just a little bit offensive. But it is hilarious so that counter balances everything.
The story follows two newly graduated Mormons who are sent out to spread the word about the Book of Mormon to the people of a village in Uganda. One is a follower who believes he is God’s gift to Mormoning and the other is an over-enthusiastic elder with a healthy imagination and tendency to lie. This all makes for some funny situations as they try to baptise the Ugandans into the church.
As you’d expect from the minds of Parker and Trey, it is not for the fragile of mind. Or children! There is a lot of swearing and some of the themes are a bit close to the edge but it is a wickedly funny show. The songs are funny. The actors are funny. The play within a play is funny. The whole damn thing is funny!
It’s the funniest musical I’ve seen this year. And even if it wasn’t the only musical I’d seen this year, it would still be the best!
