Play All The Music!

Another day another gadget to play with!

Having wanted one for quite a long time but never really being able to justify the purchase of one for a small-ish house, I have finally got my grubby little hands on a Sonos music system for our house!

The Sonos music system is a series of integrated players that can hook up to your wireless network, and stream any manner of radio stations, music services such as Napster and Deezer and also any music that you may stored on your own PC. This gives you access to pretty much all the music you could ever want!

There are two types of player the Play:5 and Play:3, the numbers determining how many speakers are inside the unit so the Play:5 is slightly bigger then the 3. These are connected to a bridge which is plugged into your wireless router and PC giving you the access to everything.

With most technology these days the set up can take ages as you have to configure it to work with your existing equipment. Not so with Sonos. Plug in the bridge and press and hold two buttons on the player to synch and Bob’s your mother’s brother! I wanted to add in all the music I have stored on my PC and that was as simple as telling Sonos where my iTunes library file was and it scans it all from there!

If you’ve got multiple players around your house you can set them up to play separate things at the same time or group them together so that they all play in synch. Everything is controlled, in my case, via our Android phones and tablet and is really easy to use.

So what finally persuaded me to buy it then? Well, it might have had something* to do with getting a 30% discount through the company I work for. And with such a good discount it made sense to get more than one so I decided to get one Play:5 for the kitchen and two Play:3 units; one to go in the bedroom (it can be used as an alarm as well!) and the other into an as yet un-decided location.
