Superbowl Party Time
Yesterday was Superbowl Sunday and for the second year running we had a Superbowl Party with American food, drink and, obviously, the game to watch. An 11.30pm UK kick off time meant that we’d be up into the early hours of Monday. Luckily I’d had the foresight to book the day off work.
I’d spent a bit of time preparing for the game, trying to find some beers from Seattle and New England to drink during the game and also shopping for your more traditional food of burgers, hot dogs, et al. I’d even managed to find some cheap bunting and an American flag to decorate the lounge with.

We started the evening with a couple of cold beers (Coors Light, not the good stuff!) and then dished up all the food so that people could help themselves. An oversight on my part meant that the spicy chicken wings were missing from the menu.

After we’d had our fill we killed a bit of time with Cards Against Humanity before settling in for the game itself. First half beers were the Redhook Long Hammers from Seattle, a strong 6.2% ale. We’d decided that starting with the strong ones and working down was the sensible option.
The game itself was a bit dull for the first quarter it ended 0-0 but it came into life in the 2nd as the Patriots twice took the lead before the Seahawks hit back and the half ended up tied 14-14.
The halftime show saw Katy Perry stride onto the stage on a massive Lion, singing about how she had the eye of the tiger, so I’m not sure if she knows there’s a difference! Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot also joined her on stage.
For the second half we moved onto the east coast beers with some from the Smuttynose brewery. First up was the Shoals Pale Ale followed by the amusingly-named Bouncy House for the final quarter. These didn’t go down to well and we all agreed that the Redhook ale was the better of the three we sampled.
There was some drama at the end of the game when with 20 seconds to go, the Seahawks who were trailing by four points gave the ball away on the goal line when they used the wrong play and the ball ended up back in the Patriots hands who held on to win the game 28-24. The Seattle Seahawks had failed to become the last team since the Patriots to retain the Superbowl trophy.
And so with the clock ticking around past 3.30am we eventually turned in for the night, knackered, full from food and probably a little bit drunk!
