Bonnie Scotland

A friend of mine is getting married later this month up in Edinburgh and she’s chosen a date that coincides with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. As a big comedy fan I’ve always wanted to visit the festival but never really got round to it (time, money, etc…) but this year I’ve got a good excuse.

The wedding is taking place on the Sunday of the bank holiday so The Wife and I are going up a couple of days early to take in some of the events at the Fringe and to make the weekend last longer. It looks like it could be the only break we get between now and the end of the year!

There are hundreds of shows to see there but for the Friday night we chose to see two comedy stalwarts (not to be confused with Hogwarts) Rhod Gilbert and Jimmy Carr who both happen to be playing at the same venue (obviously not at the same time!) so we won’t have much running about to do between gigs. Because they are big names, these shows were booked back in May to ensure we got in before they sold out (you can see where this is going can’t you!).

Which left us with just the Saturday to sort out. I’d narrowed it down to a handful of shows but the logistics of timing and getting between venues was proving to be a bit more difficult. But in the end I’d got it down to Josh Widdicombe and Nina Conti for the evening with a couple of afternoon shows to fill the time.

However, when I came to book the tickets today, it turned out that Widdicombe was sold out, and I could only get one ticket to see Nina Conti! So I had to go back through the shows I’d put down as maybe’s and work out which of those were more preferable, take out the ones that The Wife might not like and then work out if we could get between them with enough time to spare.

Eventually I managed to whittle it down so that in the evening we could go to see Jimeoin and Andrew Maxwell, both of whom I’ve never seen live before. There’d be time enough between the shows to get to them, and most importantly of all, there were still tickets available for the Saturday night. I chucked the tickets in my basket and completed the payment as quickly as I could!

Mission accomplished!
