Making Music Mash-ups

I’ve long been a fan of the music mashup, where two or more tracks are mixed together to make an altogether new version of a song. It started many, many years ago, around 1998, when I heard a mashed track in a club of Billie Jean and I Know You Got Soul.

Different to a remix, they come in a few formats. A simple A+B where the lyrics of one song are added to the tune of another, an amalgamation of multiple tracks across a simple backing track, or a multiple track remix. There have been some notable mashup albums released over the years, the most famous of which is American Edit by Dean Grey, which is a total reworking of Green Day’s American Idiot album.

Recently, with a little bit of spare time on my hands(!) I started playing about with a couple of tracks that are both favourites of My Two Girls. The first was Trustfall by P!nk and the second was Golden from the Netflix smash K-Pop Demon Hunters. There are a few similarities in the two tunes and so I gave it a go.

Using Audacity I imported the vocal and instrumental parts for both songs, and the first thing to do was to match the key of the two songs and then adjust the tempo so that they were aligned. With this done it was a case of splicing the Pink vocal track into sections and aligning them with the instrumental.

I added some vocal parts from Golden at various parts throughout the track to add a bit more depth to finish it off. The track was saved and named Golden Trustfall, and then uploaded to Soundcloud and a few other mash-up music-sharing sites.

With the mashup finished, I then created a video to go with it to upload to YouTube so that I could share the mix. It took a while to find a Trustfall video that didn’t fall foul of YT’s copyright issues but I eventually found one and mixed the video to match with the song and uploaded it to YT. And below is the finished version…

I’m really happy with how this mash-up turned out and The Girls really like it too! Now, what songs shall I do next…?
