A Trip Down Memory Lane
One of the reasons for coming to Toronto this year was for me to go back to where I first lived, nearly 40 years ago. So this morning we headed to Union Station to take the metro line north to Sheppard/Yonge where we changed trains to take the line to Don Mills.
Back in 1974, due to my dad’s work, my family moved out to Toronto which is how I ended up being born there. Our house back then was in an apartment building on Forest Parkway Drive which is a five minute walk from Don Mills station, although the station wasn’t there in those days.
It’s quite a nice area with a large park in front of it and we eventually found number 25 and although I wanted to go inside we quickly established that this wouldn’t be a good idea! We used to live on the 9th floor and I reckon there would have been some good views from up there.
Next on the agenda, after a stop at a local supermarket for a drink, was St Timothy’s church where I was christened. Again, we weren’t able to go inside as it was locked up so after a couple of pictures we headed on our way to Fairview Mall I should say we went to have a look round the shops, but I needed the toilet!
We then walked down Sheppard Ave East towards the final stop on our trip down memory lane, North York General Hospital, the place where I was born. I can’t work out if the story my mum tells me that my dad, while driving her to the hospital for the birth, followed the signs for “Deliveries” is a wind-up or not!
We jumped back onto the metro line to go back to the city and became proper tourists once more as we visited the old and new City Halls and also a wander through the Eaton Centre.
As it was our last evening in the city that night, The Wife had booked a table at the 360 Restaurant, the revolving restaurant at the top of the CN Tower. So we got dolled up in our finest (well I put on a shirt and pair of trousers!) and headed up the tower to take in the magnificent views across the city.
After a wander around the edge we took our window table and enjoyed a really nice dinner as the sun set over the city. It was a perfect way to end what had been a great week.
