World Cup Footy Songs

It’s nearly time for the greatest tournament in the world to start and the rush of football songs to go with the World Cup has already started.

Dizzzzeee (sp) Rascal and James Corden have released one, Terry Venables has re-released one, and the CD bargain bins in shops are awash with collection albums of “The Greatest Football Songs Ever”, “World Cup Football Party”, “The Best Ever Football Anthems” And “Songs That Have Nothing To Do With Football But We’ve Put Them All Together And Wacked The Word Football On The Title To Jump On The Bandwagon” and other such rubbish.

Once again, there’s no England Squad song, because nothing will ever be better than World In Motion despite it being 20 years old.

One that doesn’t annoy the tits off me this year is by comedian Mitch Benn which sums up the English World Cup experience quite well I think…

One song that has re-surfaced again is Three Lions. This time it features Robbie Williams, Russell Brand. Unfortunately it has been over-produced to within an inch of its life by adding in a soprano singer to add some high pitch squealing that really isn’t needed, and changes it from a good football song to a below-average pop song. Baddiel & Skinner, what were you thinking?

It’s amazing to hear the number of songs that have got player’s names in it. Ant & Dec did it in “We’re On The Ball” For a football song to remain a ‘classic’ it shouldn’t tie itself in to a particular era by including names of players who are going to be gone in a few years time.

Plus there’s also the added embarrassment of a player being name-checked who then doesn’t actually go to the World Cup. Step forward spectacled Sam Welch with your “Fabio” song, whose lyrics include the line

“get it to the feet of Theo Walcott”

That’s Theo Walcott, the Arsenal winger who wasn’t selected for the England squad. Fail!
