They Think It’s All Over. Well It Is Actually!
Our football season came to an end yesterday with a match against Stockbury Athletic. Due to all the bad weather earlier in the year, the league had to extend the season by a week to get all the matches in.
Unfortunately Medway Council wouldn’t allow us to use any of their pitches (even though we paid for them) and so matches were rescheduled to take place on private pitches in the area. As a result our game was moved to Beechings Cross and kicked off later than normal.
The whole game had an end-of-season feel to it and was played in fairly good spirits as neither side really gained anything from it. The only bonus to us was that a win would move us one place up the league table into 6th place.
And win it we did, putting five past them and only conceding two even with our goalkeeper out on pitch in the second half!
I scored the first of our goals, a header from a corner, to cap what has been a good season for me. 8 goals from defence, 7 of them headers, which is my best tally in about six or seven years since I moved into the back line. This actually made me the team’s third highest scorer this year which is quite disturbing, and I could have had more had I not been out with a broken toe for so long!
We have suffered from a lack of goals all season, although our play has been generally quite good. This inability to score has resulted in 6 drawn matches this year that we should have won, and some close defeats where we maybe should have taken something from the game.
Hopefully next season will be better, a few new players should be joining and hopefully we’ll not have as many players suffer with injuries. And I can include myself in the latter group (see here and here)! But for now I’m going to enjoy the close season and a few Sunday morning lie-ins!
