It’s For The Kids

It’s been a while since we went to a comedy gig but last night The Wife, @phileasphil and I trotted on down to The Comedy Store in Leicester Square for a stand up charity event for Kids Company, a charity that helps children in inner-city areas overcome abuse, neglect and hunger.

The evening was hosted by Adam Bloom, a high-energy comic who got the crowd going for the evening. The first act of the night was John Moloney who was absolutely hilarious and the best act of the evening without a doubt. He did a routine about Edward his cat which was just superb and had everyone rolling on the floor with laughter.

Next up on stage was Marlon Davis who had a tough job following Moloney and, although he was funny, he couldn’t get the same laughs that Moloney did and ended up being the weakest act on the bill.

He was followed by Milton Jones who seems to have suddenly been thrust into the limelight in the last few years despite being around for years. I can remember seeing him about 15 years ago and listening to his radio show back in 1998. He delivered his briliant one-liners and picked the crowd up after the lull during the previous set.

After the break, in which we all bought raffle tickets, we had a speech from the founder of Kids Company and then a quick auction for a bottle of champagne (for which some yank paid £100!). Back to the laughs with Otiz Cannelloni a comedic magician although he only did one actual trick. Although his Vindaloo shuffle routine was brilliant.

The headline act, in the sense that the last person is the headliner, not because they’re the funniest was Patrick Monahan, winner of ITV’s Show Me The Funny tv programme. His routines all work off feedback from the audience and everyone joined in so it went down well.

Overall it was a brilliant night for a great cause, although we didn’t win any of the raffle prizes at the end of the night. John Moloney was by far the best comedian of the night, with Milton and Otiz a close second, all stitched together effortlessly by Adam Bloom. If you can get to see any of these comics live, then do so (although maybe not Marlon!).

Here’s a copy of the set that Moloney did. Enjoy!
