Celebration Time
I never win anything. OK, that’s not entirely true, but I rarely win anything worthwhile. A tenner on the lottery every 6 months or so. And it’s not for lack of trying. But today I found out that I’ve won a competition I forgot that I had entered.
The West Ham podcast ran a competition last season in association with Coke, centred around goal celebrations. A number of celebrations were put forward which were then whittled down to three, and listeners were asked to vote for their favourite one. Those people who voted for the winning celebration would then have their names put into the customary ‘hat’ and the winner would get two tickets to an away game of their choice the following season!
Now I can’t remember what the actual winning celebration was let alone the choice of three I had to go for. I’ve got a feeling that it was Ian Wright and Neil Ruddock re-enacting Paolo DiCanio’s push on Referee Paul Alcock, but I’m not sure!
When I rang up the company responsible (Sports Revolution) to claim my prize I was told that I needed to select three West Ham games, put them in order of preference and then they’d try to get the tickets for the games in that order. I was also told I could choose home games if I wanted! Now came the hard part, trying to decide which games to go for…
First choices would probably have to be the games at Anfield or Old Trafford, even if it would mean a spanking for West Ham! Unfortunately, both these games are going to be televised on Sky and are also 5.30pm kick-offs, so why spend a load of money travelling to the games (travel costs weren’t included in the prize) and get home really late when I could watch them in the comfort of a friend’s house (I don’t have Sky!). So that was those two out.
As travel wasn’t included I decided it was better to choose a London derby game and so I chose two games at stadiums I’d not been to, White Hart Lane and Stamford Bridge. West Ham versus Chelsea games are usually entertainment, East v West!
As I’d been told I could include home games in my selection, my final choice was the final game of the season, Sunderland at home. As the fiancée isn’t a huge football fan I’d be able to take a Mackem friend of mine to this game, and I’m sure he’d appreciate it a lot more!
Having chosen those three games and put them in order (1-Spurs, 2-Sunderland, 3-Chelsea) I phoned Sports Revolution back to confirm them and was told to expect a call nearer the time of the first game to find out if I’d be going to it. So I am probably going to forget all about this now as the first of those three games isn’t until March next year!
