Rain, Rain Go Away

A massive storm overnight kept us up from about 6 o’clock this morning, although it woke us a couple of times prior to this. Extremely strong winds and the pounding of the rain upon our roof had an easy victory over our earplugs.

It looks as though the rain is here to stay for the day as well. To get to the restaurant for breakfast we had to put on the heavy rain coats that are supplied with the room, we both looked rather fetching!

To be honest we’ve been pretty lucky with the weather (when you consider some of our previous holidays!) as this is the first wash-out since we arrived and so we can’t really complain. It eventually eased off just before lunchtime, but it still remained overcast for the rest of the day.

Having spent some of the morning revising for it, we did the last of our AOW dives, the mandatory Underwater Navigation dive in the lagoon in the afternoon, and it was the hardest one of all. At least it was for me!

There were three tasks we had to complete, the first being to measure our kick-cycle length to a point and back. The next two involved using a compass to navigate a 20-kick square around the lagoon, firstly turning to the right and then to the left. The idea being that when you had completed your turns and kicks you were somewhere near your starting point. Not as easy as it sounds!

The gf was chosen to go first on each of the tasks and did really well, completing them with no errors, and always being within 6 metres of her starting position.

When it came to my go at navigating the squares, I totally ballsed up the first one and so I had to re-do it. My problem was that I was tending to favour one leg and would kick harder with it and this meant my kicks weren’t equal.

On my second attempt I actually lost count of the number of kicks on the first leg of the square and so immediately thought I’d ballsed it up again. So when I’d finished I was assuming I would have to do it all again, but somehow I managed to end up only 4 metres from the starting position!

In the end we both managed to complete our tasks and so had completed the course. We are now Advanced Open Water Divers!

The rest of the day was spent split between the bar and our room as the rain continued to fall.
